Are Krill Oil Capsules Better Than Fish Oil?

Are Krill Oil Capsules Better Than Fish Oil?
By Gordon P Hall

Some people are asking, are krill oil capsules better than fish oil? Before I tell you my opinion, I will tell you what krill are. They are small crustaceans resembling shrimp. They are at the bottom of the food chain, and are eaten by whales, seals and fish. They are between 1cm to 5cm long. They are normally found in the colder oceans such as the Antarctic and the Northern Pacific Oceans.

The krill are very small, so they are unlikely to contain any contaminants. They are sourced from the Antarctic ocean, which are the most pristine waters in the world. Krill oil capsules are in a phospholipid form which is absorbed by our body better than the triglyceride form of most fish oils. It has natural antioxidants present which help to preserve the oil.

However it is not a viable alternative to Omega3 for a number of reasons. The biggest reason is that it only contains a low level of DHA fatty acids at 9%. It is no purer than the Omega 3 oil that I buy from my New Zealand company because the Omega 3 oil is molecularly distilled to remove the impurities. The company that I buy my oil from, sources their fish from the pristine sub arctic waters of the Southern Ocean off the coast of New Zealand.

While the phospholipid form appears to be better for bio-availability than 'normal' triglyceride fish oils. It is not considered superior to the ester form. It is considered to be on a par. It still does not act as an effective antioxidant for the body, as the antioxidants present are for the preservation of the oil. To top it all off, the krill oil capsules are about 8 times more expensive than purified Omega 3 capsules.

There is some concern, that if we start catching krill, we, meaning man are likely to catch them so efficiently that they would be in danger of being made extinct, like the North Atlantic Cod. If we catch too many of them, we would wipe out the fish that depend on them for food. Remember the Bison in North America? They said there were too many of them to be wiped out.
